Supporting a partner through miscarriage

Miscarriage Support
A miscarriage is a deeply unique experience. It changes your sense of safety. It can also completely take away your feeling of control.
When a loss happens, partners often grieve in very different ways. Understanding these differences is the first step toward healing together.

Three Common Ways People Cope
When life feels out of control, our brains try to protect us. You or your partner might fall into one of these patterns:
  • Withdrawing Inward: Needing quiet, space, and time alone to reflect.
  • Seeking a Witness: Needing to speak out, cry, and have the grief seen by others.
  • Feeling Numb: Experiencing dissociation or feeling completely blank as a defense against the pain.
All of these responses are completely normal. There is no wrong way to feel.

How to Support Your Partner

The key to staying connected is open communication. You do not have to guess what your partner needs.
  • Ask Open Questions: Ask them directly what feels helpful in this exact moment.
  • Give Them Space: Allow them to feel exactly how they feel without trying to fix it.
  • Stay Flexible: What they need this morning might change by this evening.

Remembering Your Own Grief

As a partner, you are going through your own version of this loss. Your pain is real and valid too.
Sometimes, two different coping styles can clash. One person may want to talk while the other needs silence. Recognise that you are both hurting, even if it looks different from the outside.

When to Reach Out for Help

If you or your partner feel stuck, professional support is always available.  Read more about the support I offer at: Online Baby Loss and Miscarriage Counselling or contact me today to find out more about Couples counselling options or 1to1 sessions.  You do not have to do this alone.
